Description
This eight-day course is intended for experienced computer forensic examiners who encounter data, file formats, or technical problems that are not fully supported by their existing forensic software. Participants learn how to use generative artificial intelligence tools to create and adapt small scripts, database queries, and utilities by describing what they need in plain language, running the result, and correcting it through repeated testing.
Practical exercises draw on common forensic challenges, including working with SQLite databases, parsing logs and structured data, converting results into useful formats, handling unfamiliar file/data types, and repairing or replacing outdated software utilities. Participants also learn when to use cloud-based tools, when a local/privately run AI model is more appropriate, and how to protect sensitive information throughout the process.
The course does not train participants to become software developers, and previous programming experience is not required. The focus is on using these tools to overcome technical barriers while maintaining control of the forensic process. Participants remain responsible for defining the task, testing the work, confirming the results, and documenting the method. The tools are not used to assess the importance of evidence or determine investigative direction.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the capabilities and limitations of generative artificial intelligence tools in the context of computer forensics application
- Choose between cloud-based and locally hosted tools based on the sensitivity of the data and the requirements of the task
- Describe a technical forensic problem clearly enough to produce a useful script, query, or utility
- Run, troubleshoot, and make small changes to existing or newly generated Python scripts
- Create and verify SQLite and other database queries used to examine application data
- Build simple tools to parse logs and structured or unstructured data into usable formats
- Apply a methodical approach to unfamiliar file formats and unsupported applications
- Test generated work against known results and document the process, limitations, and checks performed while protecting the integrity and privacy of evidence
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to law enforcement officers and civilian computer forensic analysts working in a technological crime investigative unit or program
- Applicants must have completed the Computer Forensic Examiner Course (CMPFOR). Alternatively, consideration can be given to experienced computer forensic examiners, preferably with two years of experience, at the discretion of the lead instructor
- No previous programming experience is required
- Acceptance or refusal is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on attendance, participation and successful completion of all required assignments and learning evaluations
- Various evaluation methods are used, including a written exam with practical exercises and a final project
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted in accordance with the CPC Academic Directives and at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
